Aims and Objectives of the Society
-
The Anglo-Korean Society was founded in 1956 to foster friendships
between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea.
-
The primary object of the Society is the bringing together of all those
in the UK who are interested in Korean matters.
-
The Society organises a variety of social and cultural events throughout
the year to suit the wishes of the members. The Annual General Meeting is
always well attended and a Korean buffet is served afterwards. In addition
two annual dinners are held, one at the House of Commons with a guest
speaker, the other a Korean buffet or dinner to celebrate Chuseok (Korean
Harvest Moon Festival).
-
Wherever possible the cost to members of attending events is subsidised
from subscriptions received and the generosity of our sponsors.
-
A regular Newsletter is issued which keeps members up to date with
reports on past events and details of the forthcoming programme.
-
The Society enjoys continual on-going support from the Korean Embassy
for all its activities and HE the Korean Ambassador kindly allows the
Society the use of its facilities from time to time. The recent opening of
the Korean Cultural Centre in London has given the Society an additional
venue for both meetings and social events and is proving to be very popular.
Membership
-
Individual membership is open to anyone resident in the UK who is interested in Korea, or things Korean, who subscribes to
the objectives and activities of the Society. Corporate
membership is open to any British company with interests in Korea and to
Korean Companies represented in the UK.
-
Members generally have close personal ties with Korea and/or Korean
Companies and many have spent several years working in Korea. The original
core membership was made up of representatives from the diplomatic service,
academics and the military but this has now evolved into a representation
that is more broadly oriented towards industry, commerce and culture.
